Aerosol spectrometer for particle size and particle concentration


The Palas scattered light aerosol spectrometers are for particle size analysis and concentration determination. On the Palas Promo®, the welas® sensors, which are equipped with measuring volumes of different sizes if required, can be easily connected via optical fibres and exchanged as required. These sensors allow reliable measurement in the concentration range from <1 particle/cm3 to 106 particles/cm3 and are available for measurement in both gases and liquids.

Unique are the up to four measuring ranges in one device:

  • 0,2 µm – 10 µm
  • 0,3 µm – 17 µm
  • 0,6 µm – 40 µm
  • 2 µm – 100 µm (additionally for sensors 2300 und 2500).

Up to 128 size channels per measuring range and a concentration range from < 1 particle/cm3 to 106 particles/cm3 characterise the Promo® aerosol spectrometer.

A touch display enables convenient operation. Measurements can be started easily, with all data such as the current number distribution and number concentration as well as 24 other statistical values being evaluated and displayed in real time. With the Promo® as a stand-alone measuring device (i.e. without an external computer), continuous measurements are carried out. All accumulated data can be stored with a maximum temporal resolution of 1 s. The Promo® can thus be used independently for weeks. Promo® can thus measure independently for weeks and save accruing data. The Promo® can also be integrated into a company network for data transfer. The Promo® has a standardised interface and can be controlled by a process control system or by a simple Labview programme. Therefore, Promo® is particularly suitable for control and monitoring applications.

The new Promo® measurement technology:

All Promo® have a new, fast 20 MHz signal processing processor that examines the course of each individual particle signal. This allows coincident events, i.e. more than one particle in the measurement volume at the same time, to be detected on the individual signal and corrected (according to Dr. Umhauer / Prof. Dr. Sachweh). This enables the extension of the maximum concentration limit up to 106 particles/cm3 (welas® sensor 2070). Even in low concentrations < 1 particle/cm3 with the welas® sensor 2500, this leads to a higher measuring accuracy.

The high classification accuracy and the high size resolution with regard to particle size are guaranteed by the following special features (see diagram 1):

  • Patented T-aperture
        ⇒ No edge zone error
  • New digital single signal processing
        ⇒ Coincidence detection and correction on the single signal, allowing measurement at higher concentrations.
