Particle size distribution ELPI+™ from DEKATI

Real-time measurement of particle size distribution Electrical Low Pressure Impactor ELPI+™

The ELPI+™ is the new, optimized version of the widely used and proven ELPI™ system. The ELPI+™ enables the real-time measurement of particle size distribution and concentration within a size range from 6 nm to 10 µm with a measuring frequency of 10 Hz. Features of the ELPI+™ include real-time measurement, single operation, measurement over a wide concentration range, a wide particle size range, and a rugged design for use in harsh environments. The use of impactor technology allows chemical analysis of size-classified particles after measurement. In addition, the ELPI+™ can be used to measure particle charge distribution in real time and for gravimetric impact measurements. All these features allow the ELPI+™ to be used in a variety of particle measurement applications.

Measuring procedure of the ELPI+™

The measuring procedure of the ELPI+™ can be divided into three main parts: Particle charging, size classification in a cascade impactor and electrical determination with powerful electrometers. The particles are first provided with a known charge in the charging unit. After charging, the particles are transferred to a low-pressure cascade impactor with 14 electrically isolated impactors. The particles are collected in relation to their aerodynamic diameter on the different impactor plates, whereby the electric charge transported by the particles to each impactor stage is measured in real time by powerful electrometers.

The measured current signal is directly proportional to the concentration of the number of particles. The particle separation in each individual impactor stage depends on the aerodynamic size of the particles. Measured current signals are converted into particle size distributions using relations describing the characteristics of the charging unit and impactor platforms and depending on particle size. The result is the particle number concentration and size distribution in real time. By switching off the charging unit, the ELPI+™ can also be used for particle charge distribution measurements.
