Positive Material Identification (PMI) with EDXRF

Material identification, also called Positive Material Identification (PMI) is used to analyze and identify material grade and alloy composition for safety, quality assurance and quality control.

Material identification can also be used to quickly sort unknown alloys and other materials including powders and liquids, and can be used in industrial forensics and failure material analysis identification. By looking at the concentration of the elemental constituents in a sample, material identification verifies material type by comparing differences in composition that define the specific types of materials being analyzed.

PMI can verify the proper alloy or material is being used and prevent costly product failure in manufacturing and is usually implemented in both production and asset integrity management across many industries including pharmaceutical, chemical, oil and gas, power, aerospace and fabrication.

Among the standard measurement techniques being used, XRF offers a fast and non-destructive means for material identification. Applied Rigaku Technologies EDXRF systems offer the standard alloy identification tables as well as the capability for the user to create a custom table defined for any material where the types of materials can be differentiated by differences in element composition.

  • Using the integrated ASTM/JIS library for Fe, Cu, Al Alloys. Example: Unknown Brass sample:

  • Using your own ID Table. Example: Auto catalysts
Your advantages:
  • PMI is available for all 3 Rigaku Models NEX QC+ QuantEZ, NEX DE and NEX CG II
  • Fast, Flexible, applicable to any sample/application
  • When known markers are added to the material, PMI can also be used to assess material authenticity.
